The Alaskan Klee Kai is a northern breed of dog often referred to as a "mini husky", as they resemble the larger huskies in appearance, yet are less than twice as small. In fact, the breed was developed to be a compact companion sized version of the Alaskan Husky. The term "Klee Kai" was derived from Alaskan Athabaskan words meaning "small dog." Standing at less than 17.5 inches tall, the Alaskan Klee Kai fully emulate their name. To hear the story of how the Alaskan Klee Kai came to be, please read the developer, Linda Spurlin's comprehensive review.
The Alaskan Klee Kai is a fairly new breed and still very rare, coming into conception in the mid-1970's and first being released to the public in the late-1980's. The Alaskan Klee Kai was officially recognized by the American Rare Breed Association (ARBA) in 1995 and by the United Kennel Club (UKC) in 1997.
